LIMCAF 2022 JURY MEMBERS FOR GRAND FINALE

 

 

Prof. Jerry Buhari (Chairman – LIMCAF 2022 Jury) Jerry Buhari is a professor of fine art at Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. He has been lecturing art since 1982. He is a multimedia artist whose work oscillates between conventional and unconventional use of materials. He engages objects and environments to create installations and performances that address myriad issues of socio-political commentaries, environment, and spirituality. He has participated in international artists' workshops and residencies. Jerry Buhari has won a number of honours and awards, some from the Commonwealth Institute, The Ford Foundation, and Japan Foundation. He has had 12 solo exhibitions and participated in over 60 group shows within and outside the country. He has chaired and participated in the adjudication of several national cultural and art festival competitions and curated and co-curated major art exhibitions. Two of the most recent exhibitions he curated were, The Essential Jimo Akolo solo exhibition, 2022, and Zaria Art Society: a celebration of legacies in 2019. Jerry Buhari has participated as chairman and member of the National Universities Commission on different occasions at Nigerian universities. He has been an external examiner and moderator of several higher institutions and professorial assessor to higher institutions in Nigeria and abroad. Jerry Buhari is an experienced university administrator haven served on more than 20 major university committees and chaired several including the head of department and dean of faculty at one time or the other. He has undertaken significant professional projects within and outside the country some of which are consultant and advisor to Arthouse Contemporary Limited, k’o gallery, Arthouse Foundation, consultant Central Bank of Nigeria currency museum, and a board member of several art agencies and institutions. Professor Buhari was the Jury Chair for LIMCAF 2009 


Odun Orimolade, Ph.D is a multidisciplinary artist and academic who directs her work on trans-disciplinary approaches, research, and collaborations. Her research interests are in practice approaches, creative engagement, navigation, and influences that challenge and inform creative production. Her research also looks into the issues and initiatives that promote or limit practice as a form of creative capital. She is also interested in participatory research practices as an intervention into various spaces. Orimolade lectures in the Fine Art Department, Yaba College of Technology. She has served as coordinator for the UNESCO/UNEVOC center for research and sustainable development, Sub-Dean of the School of Art, Design, and Printing, and Curator of the Yusuf Grillo Gallery. She was instrumental in the establishment and development of the Yaba Art Museum, where she also serves as the Curatorial Director. Orimolade is a 2022 Research Fellow of the College of Human Sciences, University of South Africa.

Timipre Willis Amah Ph.D, is a fine art photographer, painter, printmaker and a lecturer with the Department of Fine and Applied Arts, Niger Delta University, Wilberforce Island, Bayelsa State, Nigeria. Mah had his first degree from the University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom state, an MFA from the University of Nigeria, Nsukka and his Ph.D from the University of Port Harcourt. He is a member of the Society of Nigerian Artist (SNA), Visual Printmakers Association of Nigeria (VPAN), Pan-Africa Circle of Artist (PACA) and the Art Council of the African Studies Association (ACASA). In 2014 Amah, won First prize in the Boskel National Photo Contest in Port Harcourt, Rivers State and in 2010 he won first prize in the Omaba Yemisi Adedoyin Shyllon Art Foundation (OYASAF) National Photography Competition. He has had three solos and several local and international group exhibitions, with his works collected locally and internationally.

Okechukwu Nwafor is an Assistant Professor of Art History in Wesleyan University, Middletown, Connecticut, United States. His first book, Aso ebi: Dress, Fashion, Visual Culture and Urban Cosmopolitanism in West Africa (University of Michigan Press, 2021), investigates how Aso ebi (family dress), fashion, and photography engendered a new visual culture that has redefined urban cosmopolitan experience in West Africa. His on-going book project is provisionally titled, Exit of an Icon: Photography and the Visual Culture of Death and Funeral in West Africa 

Before Nwafor went to Wesleyan, he was a professor at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, Nigeria where he taught courses in art history and painting and was part of the Department’s postgraduate board. He has served as a chair of the Department of Fine and Applied Arts at the Nnamdi Azikiwe University and was a Forsyth Postdoctoral fellow in the History of Art Department at the University of Michigan. He worked on his second book project when he was a University of Michigan Presidential Scholar (UMAPS) in 2018 and also a Postdoctoral fellow in Photography and Visual Culture at the Wits Institute of Social and Economic Research (WISER) in the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa.  

Nwafor’s articles have appeared in journals, including Cultural Critique, African Arts, African Studies, Nka: Journal of Contemporary African Art, Fashion Theory, Critical Intervention: Journal of African Art History and Visual Culture. 

  

Mariagoretti Eze is a graphic artist/photographer living in Abuja, Nigeria. Her photographs are fueled by a burning desire to create, and the need to express her thoughts.  

She makes conceptual photographs in order to provoke a conversation around things that she is invested in. She explores themes such as social issues such as environment, humanity, and social justice forms her work, through which she seeks to bring awareness to societal issues and induce social change. 

She was born and raised in Enugu State where she obtained an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) and Higher National Diploma (HND) at the Institute of Management and Technology Enugu. Majoring in Graphic Arts. She graduated in 2012 with distinction both in OND and HND. In pursuit of higher academic qualifications, she enrolled for a Post-graduate Diploma at the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and graduated with distinction in 2018 and currently pursuing her master's degree. 

Her dexterity has earned her a number of awards which include the overall winner of the 11th Spanish Visual Art Competition in 2016 and Life in My City Arts Festival in 2012 with works titled 'Waiting for the third Monkey' and 'Rejuvenation' respectively. She has participated in various group exhibitions both in Nigeria and abroad. 

She is a member of the Female Artist Association of Nigeria (FEAAN). Currently, she works with Triokreations Limited, in Abuja. Also manages her own company Bentrica Letras and she is also represented by Artnuances Art Gallery.  

Mariagoretti Eze won LIMCAF 2012 Overall Prize 

 

Olumide Oresegun was born on September 23, 1981. He graduated with distinction in painting from Yaba College of Technology in 2006. He has won many prestigious painting awards. His awards include the 2007 Pendulum Gallery Award, the 2008 Award by the Spanish Embassy and first Prize at the Enugu Arts Festival of 2007. He has featured on CNN International News, TV stations in Kenya and South Africa, REUTERS, BBC News, CGTV, JAPAN News and numerous Nigerian news media. He gave three successful solo exhibitions in 2011,2014 and 2016 respectively at Mydrim Gallery, Lagos and has done group exhibitions in Nigeria, United Kingdom, United States of America, Canada, Germany and Spain. Olumide Oresegun has also done selected commissioned portraits of His Highness Pope John Paul II, His Holiness Pope John Benedict XVI, Sir David Osunde, Chief Executive Officer, Koch Nigeria Ltd., the National Security Adviser to the President of Nigeria and many more.

Olumide Oresegun won the Overall Prize of LIMCAF maiden edition in 2007
